The US Senate Health and Education Committee will consider S. 1955 the week of March 6, 2006 to make health care more affordable and accessible for emergency equipment dealers and other small businesses.

Congress is considering legislation to create federally regulated small business health plans (previously known as association health plans), which would make health care more affordable and accessible for small businesses.

The US House of Representatives has passed this legislation seven times, and President George Bush has made the enactment of small business health plans a central feature of his second term health care agenda.

Sen. Michael B. Enzi (R-WY), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, introduced new legislation, S. 1955, the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act, in November 2005. The legislation attempts to address the concerns of opponents and to reach a compromise on the issues.

Beginning MONDAY, March 6, 2005, at 8:00 a.m. EST, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will accept applications for Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG).

The deadline for receipt of the AFG "fire grant" applications is 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 7, 06.

The AFG is administered by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Grants and Training (G&T) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. The AFG program assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments in the United States. In addition the AFG accepts applications from nonaffiliated EMS organizations for the activities (equipment, training, vehicles, etc.) for which fire departments are also eligible to apply.

AFG "fire grant" funds are used by the nation's firefighters and first responders to increase the effectiveness of firefighting and emergency response operations.
