Since July 02, the fire departments of the United
States have been waiting for the USFA Assistance to Firefighters Grant award announcements.
To date, there have been seven announcement rounds totaling 2,756 fire departments awards representing $170.4 million.
In a continuing effort to meet a Fire Administration goal to award all grants by the end of the calendar year '02, the USFA will make the next announcement (8th round) on November 15, 2002. The 02-03 Federal fiscal year has already begun and Congress is already working on an increase in funding for the matching Fire Act grants to be spent in 03.

FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR FIRE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE UP IN ’02 BUT INCREASES PROPOSED FOR ’03 ARE STALLED AS CONGRESS HAS NOT APPROVED APPROPRIATIONS BILLS

Congress is still considering the president’s request for $3.5 billion for grants for first responders, including firefighters, for the 2002-2003 fiscal year which began in October, 2002. Most funding for the new fiscal year is so late this year it must be handled in a continuing resolution, which is a temporary appropriations bill needed until the official thirteen appropriations bills are passed. In the past, continuing resolutions did not increase funding but simply approved continued spending at current levels. So, actual increases for matching fire grants and other spending may not occur until a lameduck session after the November 5 election or possibly not until January 2003 when the new Congress convenes.
