PA State Treasurer Joins Firefighters in Hepatitis C Awareness March;
Pennsylvania State Treasurer Barbara Hafer, calling Hepatitis C "Hero's Disease," called for comprehensive testing and better medical care for fire and rescue workers whose jobs expose them to the illness.
Speaking during a Hepatitis C Awareness March organized by Philadelphia firefighters, Hafer, a former public health nurse, said many Hepatitis C victims are "heroes who contracted this disease while saving the lives of others." The nature of fire and rescue workers' jobs puts them at particular risk of becoming infected through exposure to the blood of infected persons, Hafer explained.

Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Companies in PA Face Sept. 1 Grant Application Deadline
More Than 1,200 Applications Received to Date - Another 1,000 Expected
Volunteer fire and ambulance companies across Pennsylvania should return the grant applications for the Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company Grant Program before the Sept. 1 deadline.
"More than 1,200 volunteer fire and ambulance services have returned their application forms, but many more still need to be heard from," Lt. Gov. Schweiker said. "The fire and emergency services community have said time and again that funding is one of their top priorities, and this money provides them with some breathing room in these tough budget times.
