Many cargo airports don't have manned firefighting apparatus at the airport. Airports that handle passengers do. NEEDA believes that every airport should have adequate vehicles and trained first responders to meet every crisis. These on-site emergency forces can be provided by local fire departments, but require new US rules and funding.

Going from gate to runway, taking off and landing accidents in the past five years have increased 60 percent to 327 last year. But, the Clinton Administration maintains there have been fewer runway problems in recent months. The US House Aviation Subcommittee's March 22 hearing will ask the Federal Aviation Administration to call a technical conference of all experts to solve this problem.
